New research says pot use during pregnancy may be harmful to the developing child. We know that alcohol consumption during pregnancy can cause growth problems. Researchers at the University of North Carolina gave pregnant mice either a cannabinoid (CB) dose, or a CB mixed with alcohol, during their eighth day of pregnancy. Eight days into a mouse pregnancy is comparable to the third or fourth week of a human pregnancy. They found that the CB (both synthetic and natural) caused growth deformations comparable to alcohol. The dose combining CB and alcohol more than doubled the possibility of birth defects. “We know that there is no safe period to drink alcohol during a pregnancy, and I think this research shows the same is likely true of marijuana use,” said the lead researcher.
